PHIXER for Synth Layers: unison and stacks that keep body on mono fold
Unison voices, A/B layers, and printed wideners can feel huge in headphones. On phone playback, Bluetooth, club PA mono, or livestream fold, sub thins and mid body hollows. Polarity and timing come first. Free phase-repair helps after residual L/R fights remain on a stereo synth bed you must keep stereo. It is not a widener, and it does not replace a true mono listen on the synth bus.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a polarity button, not a delay matcher, not a widener, and not a synth. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo synth bed you must keep stereo.
Three synth failure modes this page covers
- Unison / detuned voice stacks. Near-copies panned and detuned. Fine in cans; thin fundamental on phone or mono fold. Deep guide: Synth layers / unison phase.
- A/B layered patches + printed wideners. Dual layers or Haas / mid-side width that fights dry body when summed.
- Vocal doubles cousin. Near-copies on two paths hollow the same way a stereo synth stack can. Cousin guide: PHIXER for Vocal Doubles.
Fast synth mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Sum L+R on the synth bus or master (or monitor controller mono). Listen to sub, mid body, and lead presence.
- A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears: low fundamental, pad body, widener width that was actually cancellation.
- Mute unison / layer B / widener return briefly. Flip polarity on each path. Note which combination restores mono body.
- Confirm on a phone speaker or single earbud path, then again after any bus compressor / EQ / saturation pass, not only before cleanup.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono listen on the synth / program bus
Hard L+R sum or monitor mono. Habit: synth layers checklist and mono check workflow.
2. Hero mono core before width layers
Prefer one clear mono-ish core for sub and body. Unison and wideners for thickness and air, not as a second stereo width layer that steals Mid from the core.
3. Polarity if a path flips
Inverted layer bounce, flipped widener print, reversed interface. Flip Ø when body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.
4. Timing / detune hygiene before spectral tools
Extreme detune or Haas delay needs honest reduction toward the core, not another widener. Prefer aligning critical lows to the hero layer.
5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo synth bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
Synth path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Unison voices L/R | Fundamental dips when summed | Polarity; mono listen; quieter outer voices |
| A/B layered patch | Mid body hollows on phone | Mute test; quieter layer B |
| Printed stereo widener | Width cancels body on Bluetooth | Less Haas / M-S; quieter return |
| Supersaw + mono sub | Saw stack eats band under sub | Hero sub; mono check saws |
| Vocal doubles cousin | Stacked takes hollow like unison | Vocals guide |
| Modular multi-out cousin | Multi-out stereo fold cancels like stacks | Modular guide |
Vocal doubles cousin (short version)
- Real doubles or printed ADT create the same mono-fold shape as unison / L/R layers on a synth bed.
- Sync and polarity still come first. Spectral tools after residual L/R fights only.

When not to reach for PHIXER
- Wrong polarity on a layer or widener print (flip Ø first).
- Extreme Haas or detune as the intentional sound (reduce first).
- You only need a true mono print from one hero core (print mono; do not fake stereo width).
- Hard-panned intentional width where stereo story matters more than mono body.
